Botanical Name: Salvia greggii 'Furnams Red'

Salvia ‘Furnam’s Red’ is an evergreen perennial that reaches approximately 50 cm - 1m in height and width. This compact plant has glossy, glabrous bright green leaves that are sweetly aromatic. The leaves are lineal shaped with a rounded apex and average 2-2.5 cm long. The flowers are 2.5 cm long and are intensely red, with the bracts being a deeper red to crimson. The flowers are borne on short spikes from summer until the weather is too cold.

‘Furnam’s Red’ may grow larger in its native Texas, where this cultivar was developed by W A Furnam in the 1970’s. It is an older selection, but is very tough and hardy. The parent plant, Salvia greggii, is native to south western North American and through to Mexico, including the mountainous regions. This salvia is also known as Magenta Red Texas Sage, Cherry Sage, Greggs Sage, and Autumn Sage after the parent plant.

Full sun and well drained soil will generate the best results, but Salvia ‘Furnam’s Red’ is vigorous and considered easy to grow. It is drought tolerant and is cold hardy in most regions.

The salvia family has over 900 members with an extensive history as culinary, medicinal and ornamental plants. Ornamental salvias have become collectors items, as gardeners try to find a place in their garden for each and every one. There are salvias that will suit every type of soil and climate. More information on the Salvia genus and Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) may be found on our Common Sage page.
